 아토스 산에는 무엇이 있을까?

기자이자 시인이며 논픽션 작가로 활동하고 있는 크리스토퍼 메릴의 『숨은 신을 찾아서』. 그리스 북부 마케도니아 지역의 아크티 반도에는 해발 2033m의 아토스 산이 있다. 아토스 산은 정교회 수도원들의 공동체에 의해 통치되며, 정식 이름은 '성산 수도원 자치국'이다.

2,500여 명의 수사들과 사람들이 수도원, 동굴, 숲에 흩어져 살아간다. 하지만 아토스 산에서 여성은 발견할 수 없다. 11세기부터 여성은 한 발자국도 들어설 수 없도록 종교의 힘으로 정해져 있기 때문이다. 이처럼 아토스 산은 산과 바다, 그리고 종교의 힘으로 고립되어 있다.

이 책은 1998년부터 1999년까지 세 번에 걸쳐서 일어난, '지상 최후의 성산'이라고 불리는 아토스 산에서의 영적 순례의 기록이다. 종교라는 이름으로 참극이 벌어지는 세상 속에서, 이혼으로 인해 가정이 부서지는 일상 속에서 자신의 죄악을 깨달아버린 어느 남자가 아토스 산으로 정신적 모험을 떠난 이야기이기도 하다.

그의 '영원함에 대한 갈망'이 '지상에서 책임져야 될 사랑'과 화해하여 영적 활력을 되찾기까지의 여정 속으로 우리를 초대한다. 또한 아토스 산의 신화와 역사는 물론, 그 속에서 수행하고 있는 수사들과 사람들의 일상과 갈등, 그리고 미래에 대한 고뇌도 옮겨놓고 있다.

As Merrill’s story unfolds, we, too, hike the rough trails of Athos, exploring a place and a way of life scarcely altered since medieval times. We share encounters with monks, wolves, and spiritual seekers; visit Athos’s twenty monasteries, where exquisite art treasures are sequestered; make our way to lonely hermitages that clutch the cliffs above the sea.
